Present Continuous Tense

1. รูปแบบประโยค

ประโยคบอกเล่า

ประธาน (Subject)กริยา (be + กริยาเติม ing)
Warawanis smiling.

ประโยคคำถาม

Beประธาน (Subject)กริยาเติม ing
IsWarawansmiling?

ประโยคปฏิเสธ

ประธาน (Subject)benotกริยาเติม ing
Warawanisnotsmiling.

    run -> running
    stop -> stopping
    begin -> beginning
    แต่ open -> opening (เพราะออกเสียงหนักที่พยางค์หน้า)
  2. คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย e และไม่ออกเสียงตัว e ให้ตัด e ทิ้งก่อน แล้วจึงเติม ing เช่น
    make -> making
    use -> using ใช้
  3. คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย ie ให้เปลี่ยน ie เป็น y แล้วจึงเติม ing เช่น
    tie -> tying
    die -> dying
    lie -> lying

3. การใช้ Present Continuous Tense

  1. ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นหรือไม่เกิดขึ้นในขณะที่กำลังพูด มักจะมีคำว่า now เพื่อบอกว่ากำลังทำอยู่ หรือ กำลังเกิดขึ้น (กริยาบางตัวไม่สามารถใช้ Tense นี้ได้)
    เหตุการณ์กำลังเกิดขึ้น
    You are studying English now.
    You are not running now.
    Are you sleeping?
    They are reading their books.
    They are not watching television.
    I am studying to become a doctor. (ผมกำลังเรียนหมอ)
    I am not studying to become a dentist. (ฉันกำลังเรียนเป็นหมอฟัน)
    I am reading the book Kathi's Happiness by Ngampan. (ผมกำลังอ่านหนังสือเรื่องความสุขของกะทิ แต่งโดย งามพรรณ -- ขณะพูดไม่ได้กำลังอ่าน แต่เล่าให้ฟัง การอ่าน อาจต้องใช้เวลา 2-3 วัน)
    I am not reading any books right now. (ตอนนี้ไม่ได้อ่านหนังสืออะไรเลย)
    Are you working on any special projects at work?
    Aren't you teaching at the university now?
  3. ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังจะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคตอันใกล้นี้
    เหตุการณ์จะเกิดเร็ว ๆ นี้
    • I am meeting some friends after work. (หลังเลิกงานเดี๋ยวผมไปหาเพื่อนหน่อย)
    • I am not going to the party tonight. (คืนนี้ผมไม่ไปงาน)
    • Is Somsak visiting his parents next weekend? (เสาร์-อาทิตย์นี้ สมศักดิ์จะไปหาพ่อแม่เขาหรือเปล่า)
    • Isn't he coming with us tonight?
    • She is always coming to class late. (เจ้าหล่อนมาสายประจำ)
    • He is constantly talking. I wish he would shut up. (หมอนั่นคุยไม่หยุด อยากให้หุบปากบ้าง)
    • I don't like them because they are always complaining. (ผมไม่ชอบพวกนั้นเลย ชอบบ่นเป็นประจำ)

Conjunctions

A conjunction is a word that "joins". A conjunction joins two parts of a sentence.
Here are some example conjunctions:
Coordinating ConjunctionsSubordinating Conjunctions
and, but, or, nor, for, yet, soalthough, because, since, unless
We can consider conjunctions from three aspects.

Form

Conjunctions have three basic forms:
  • Single Word
    for example: and, but, because, although
  • Compound (often ending with as or that)
    for example: provided that, as long as, in order that
  • Correlative (surrounding an adverb or adjective)
    for example: so...that

Function

Conjunctions have two basic functions or "jobs":
  • Coordinating conjunctions are used to join two parts of a sentence that are grammatically equal. The two parts may be single words or clauses, for example:
    Jack and Jill went up the hill.
    The water was warm, but I didn't go swimming.
  • Subordinating conjunctions are used to join a subordinate dependent clause to a main clause, for example:
    I went swimming although it was cold.

Position

  • Coordinating conjunctions always come between the words or clauses that they join.
  • Subordinating conjunctions usually come at the beginning of the subordinate clause.
In this lesson we will look in more detail at:
